Phil Jones is believed to be close to signing an improved contract at Manchester United.
The 23-year-old’s current deal at Old Trafford expires next summer but he is poised to follow in the footsteps of fellow England international Chris Smalling by committing himself to the club.
The Times claims that Jones has agreed similar terms to Smalling and will get a pay rise to £80,000 per week.
Louis van Gaal is prioritising adding experience and leadership to his defence this summer, with Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos emerging as his top target, but sees the home-grown duo as vital to his plans.
Jones, who can also play at right-back and in central midfield, joined United from Blackburn Rovers for £16.5m in 2011 and has since made 128 appearances for the Red Devils.
