According to the Guardian, the Dutchman’s agent, Kees Vos, has spent the last two days in Istanbul in a bid to clinch a deal with the Super Lig giants, which had been linked with a move for the 31-year-old for the last couple of weeks.
Van Persie, who scored only 10 goals in all competitions last season, had attracted interest from Serie A arch-rivals Roma and Lazio before both clubs have pulled out of the race to sign the Dutchman, as they could not afford his £10m-a-year wages.
However, Fenerbache are understood to have reached an agreement with the former Arsenal captain, who looks set to join former United teammate Nani, who will have a medical on Sunday, in Istanbul next season.
After a poor campaign under David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal’s arrival was expected to help his fellow Dutchman to rediscover the form that had fired United to the title in the 2012-13 season but Van Persie failed to click into gear.
A series of niggling injuries coupled with poor performances, saw him relegated on the bench as Van Gaal preferred Wayne Rooney, and at times even Radamel Falcao, up-front, leading the 31-year-old to question his future at Old Trafford.
With Falcao now gone, Van Persie’s exit would save United another massive salary and confirm Van Gaal intends to sign a new striker this summer.
